High Blood
Pressure and Cholesterol: Dual Risk Factors for Heart Disease . . .
High blood pressure and high cholesterol have been proven to be major risk
factors for developing heart disease based on many clinical studies. Yet
despite this evidence and evidence that treating both of these risk
factors reduces the risk of heart disease, they remain woefully under
treated. For example, only 25% of people with high blood pressure in the
United States are considered to be under control.
High blood pressure has a continuum of risk. For every small degree that a
person’s blood pressure is over normal (120/80), the risk of heart disease
increases. This means that keeping blood pressure as close to goal as
possible is essential to preventing heart disease. Some studies have even
shown that only a two point drop in blood pressure can lower this risk.
Last summer, the government issued new guidelines about the treatment of
high cholesterol. These guidelines are more strict than previous, as
studies have shown that lower may be better as far as heart disease risk.
Based on these recommendations, 37 million Americans are considered
eligible for medications to lower cholesterol. This is 18% of the
population!
High blood pressure and high cholesterol tend to cluster together in
people and as such, increase the risk of heart disease even further. The
